CBD 101 – PRōZE Performance Nutrition https://www.proze.com Therapeutic Performance Nutrition Wed, 14 Sep 2022 07:39:51 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.8.3 https://www.proze.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/cropped-o-1-32x32.png CBD 101 – PRōZE Performance Nutrition https://www.proze.com 32 32 Tart Cherries https://www.proze.com/tart-cherries/ Wed, 14 Sep 2022 07:39:49 +0000 https://www.proze.com/?p=28113 Cherry Pie by (glam metal band) Warrant – 1991

I’m a very functional eater. Usually I choose foods based on their nutrient value vs. taste. Most of the time I’m on the “bitter” end (Kale vs. Iceberg Lettuce), but sometimes I come up on top, like with Cherries! I love Cherries! And though I’m not a big fan of Michigan State (Go Blue!), their research in 1999 sparked my interest when they stated tart cherries may relieve pain better than Aspirin. As I dug further, I found these tart and tasty treats are the ultimate Super Fruit…no wonder they say…

..and with a Cherry On Top!

Q: Are you talking about all types of Cherries?

A: No, the research is on Tart Cherries or Montmorency Cherries. They have a unique chemical composition compared to sweet cherries, providing compounds called anthocyanins and flavonoids that have a specific antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.  To say it simply, compared to sweet cherries, tart cherries have 5x the antioxidant levels, and 20x more Vitamin A!

Q: ..really better than Aspirin?

A:..and Ibuprofen. For inflammation, not necessarily pain. Tart Cherries have a very strong anti-inflammatory effect. Research has shown that its anthocyanins inhibit the SAME enzymes targeted by drugs like Aspirin and Ibuprofen to reduce inflammation and pain. One researcher estimated you only needed 20 tart cherries to provide the anti-inflammatory effects.

Q: What other benefits?

A: Some of the more researched benefits are in symptoms of Arthritis and Gout. Several studies report that Gout patients are up to 50% less likely to have an attack. Brain health, like Parkinson’s & Alzheimer’s. One small study showed dementia patients experienced improvements in verbal fluency and memory. Heart Health, research has shown it can help reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol and reduce blood pressure. Performance, many studies have shown it can reduce inflammation (after running), muscle damage, and improving muscle strength.

Q: Should I eat or drink my Tart Cherries?

A: For overall health and wellness, eating Tart Cherries every day is great. Foods have a compounding medicinal effect, every day you eatt, the body lays a foundation of good health. For the immediate and direct medicinal benefits, drinking concentrated Tart Cherry juice is recommended. Most studies were done with subjects 2oz-12oz, 1 to 2x per day. I would recommend 4-6oz per day and be patient with the health benefits.

Q: What Tart Cherry products do you take?

A: I buy Tart Cherries (frozen) from Costco. I have about 10-15 Cherries with 20 Almonds (healthy fat/protein – slows down the sugar absorption) as my mid-morning snack. I have another 10-15 that I blend with my shake at night (Tart Cherries also have a bit of natural Melatonin!).  I have ½ Tbsp of  https://www.fruitfast.com/cherryflexjar during the day and 1 Tbsp after heavy or intense workouts.  I also eat Cherry Pie from Piefection (Scottsdale and Gilbert, AZ) on special occasions (which I try to find as many as possible).

Impossible Burger https://www.proze.com/impossible-burger/ Wed, 14 Sep 2022 07:37:28 +0000 https://www.proze.com/?p=28112 The Vegan Burger..without the “Veg”?!?

First off, I’m not a vegetarian or vegan, but I probably eat more vegetables than 99% of them. Seems like more vege-whatevers are more interested in staying away from meat rather than consuming vegetables (which if you don’t know, are two separate things). The last few years, veggie burgers (without real vegetables) have exploded, the two leading ones are The Impossible Burger and Beyond Meat. They claim to look, smell, taste, even bleed just like meat…but let’s grill one up, The Impossible Burger, and take bite!

Q: What is the Impossible Burger?

A: Basically it’s a plant (and I use that word loosely)-based alternative to meat. It’s a combination of non-animal based ingredients combined to taste, smell, cook, feel like meat from animals.  The company, Impossible Foods, has a variety of products – ground sausage, nuggets, meatballs, and pork, but we’re going to focus on their Impossible Burger that is to mimic beef.

Q: What is the Impossible Burger made out of?

A: The exact ingredients are here: https://faq.impossiblefoods.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018937494-What-are-the-ingredients-in-Impossible-Burger-#:~:text=Water%2C%20Soy%20Protein%20Concentrate%2C%20Coconut,and%20Minerals%20(Zinc%20Gluconate%2C%20Thiamine. But to summarize, Soy, Coconut & Sunflower Oil, Binders, Preservatives, Vitamins. Remember it’s trying to mimic meat in (2) ways…(1) the flavor/mouth feel experience (2) the nutritional value.

  • Soy – For the protein amount/value
  • Coconut Oil – To make it sizzle and coat your mouth with flavor
  • Binders – To hold it together while cooking
  • Vitamins – To give it the nutrients to compare to meat

…it’s that simple!

Q: Is it healthier than meat?

A: If you’re asking does it have as many nutrients – vitamins/minerals and protein, the answer would be (in some ways) YES. You’re not losing out of many nutrients by eating the Impossible Burger (note: Beyond Meat, is not as nutrient dense). Compared to Beef (84% Lean), the Impossible Burger has as much or more of most nutrients. Things to consider is that Beef has 0g (vs. 9g) of carbohydrates (for those carb watchers).

Q: What about the Iron?

A: The Iron has been a hot topic among the real vs. vegan burger crowd. The Iron found in meat is heme-bound, which may be better absorbed than the iron added to meatless burgers. The heme used in the Impossible Burger is soy leghemoglobin (causes the “bleeding” characteristic), which does not have long-term safety data. The current studies have only been done on animals (ironically!) and seems to be safe.

Special note: Getting plenty of Vitamin C can help non-heme bound iron (from plants) more bioavailable for the body, so keep your Vitamin C levels up if you’re a vegetarian!

Q: Any other ingredients to worry about?

A: The protein comes from Soy, and soy is one of the eight most common food allergens, so you must watch for that. Also, if you’re focuses on Non-GMO products, The Impossible Burger contains GMO ingredients (they don’t hide it). GMO crops are resistant to Glyphosate, which have been linked to potentially harmful effects on humans – harm hormonal function, gut flora, and certain cancers.

Q: Who is The Impossible Burger good for?

A: A choice for those looking for burgers free of animal products and byproducts, or those concerned about the environment. It’s Gluten-Free and it has a comparable profile of vitamins and minerals, and pretty much the same amount of protein as traditional meat.

Q: How does it taste?

A: Most reviewers say between the Beyond Burger and The Impossible Burger, The Impossible is better has a richer and meatier flavor. It also seems to cook easier and more versatile in recipes. I’m not a big fan of either. I don’t eat a lot of beef, but when I do, it has a certain experience that can’t be matched by either of these two.

Q: Final Thoughts?

A: I try to stick to whole foods, the ingredients in The Impossible Burger aren’t necessarily bad, but they aren’t healthy either. If I were to choose non-meat, vegetable based burgers, I’d choose ones made from black beans, grains (like quinoa), potatoes, beets, real vegetables.  They won’t taste like meat, but they’ll have a few of the same characteristics and actually be vegetable-arian!

Tight & Stiff Muscles https://www.proze.com/tight-stiff-muscles/ Thu, 05 May 2022 21:51:44 +0000 https://www.proze.com/?p=26585 “You must be shapeless, formless, like water” – Bruce Lee

Ahh to be “shapeless”, “formless”, I’d feel so flexible. I hardly feel that way. My knees ache when I bend down (and get up!), I do a series of exercises just to tie my shoes, and things that I “used to do” all the time (in my 30’s) are now how I “over-do” (in my 40’s)! Ok, ok, it’s not that bad, but I’m not great as I once was😉  Bruce is on to something, it’s WATER that’s missing. We can stretch like Gumby all day, but without water, you’ll be left stiff, tight, and sore..

Drench the muscles, while stretching the muscles…

Q: Why is water so important?

A: 60% of your body is water, but where it is, is in your muscles (76%), and in a connective tissue, Fascia (70%), that is primarily responsible for why you feel tight, sore, and can’t move easily and freely. Fascia, is the casing around almost everything in your body, and when it’s dehydrated, it starts to stick together, think of saran wrap all wrapped on itself, ain’t nothing moving!

Q: I thought you get tight because your muscles get short?

A: That’s a big MYTH. Your muscles actually don’t get tight, stiff, or short, they always have the same resting length it had before you felt tight. When you stretch, the muscle doesn’t get longer, muscle length always stays the same. Your muscles are always nice and loose…and long!

Q: Then why do I feel tight, and I can’t I touch my toes like a Yogi?

A: It’s because your nervous system is protecting you. Your nervous system has more to do with your flexibility than anything. As you continue to move and take your body, slowly and cautiously, to new ranges of motion, you increase the tolerance of your nervous system – your body allows you to tolerate more of a stretch. (this is a whole subject called – stretch tolerance – we will discuss another time)

Q: What does water have to do with tightness and flexibility?

A: The role of Fascia is critical to understanding where tightness, stiffness, lack of mobility comes from. Each individual muscle and its tiny muscle fibers are encased in Fascia. Fascia is 70% water, when dehydrated, Fascia gets really sticky and sticks to what it’s encasing (muscle and muscle fibers), and to itself (other muscles it’s encasing), so now you have everything stuck together, nothing is moving. Everything feels really tight, and when you do move it, it hurts.

Q: How does water work with stretching?

A: Proper stretching, moving, massage, all these can help to break up and separate the Fascia layers so water can properly hydrate the areas. Note: Water has a difficult time to penetrate these Fascial layers when they stick together, so consuming large amounts of water can be ineffective, if you can physically separate these areas, through movement and stretching, you will allow water to absorb the tissue.

Q: How much water should I drink?

A: My general rule is, take your body weight, divide by 2, take that number and drink that number of ounces of water.  I’m 180lbs, I try to drink 90ounces per water each day. Shakes, drinks count (except coffee!). I drink 32ounce when I wake up, 16 ounces in my morning shake, 32 ounces before 4pm, and then 12-14ounces in my shake before bed. To me, hydration is more important before my workouts than after (although I do both). Water is the true SuperFood, nothing compares.

Q: Parting thoughts?

A: My dad is 82yrs old, older people really need to focus on drinking water. As we age, we lose water quicker, we lose our sense of thirst, and our bladder/lifestyle can keep us from drinking a lot. Age related weakness is due more to the loss of muscle quality than muscle mass, that’s a water problem. Dehydration thickens the blood, which makes it harder for the heart to pump, which reduces blood flow, which makes muscles tight, sore, stiff, which reduces movement, which then reduces quality of life…and we know what happens next…stay hydrated, drink electrolytes, and keep moving!

Bengay, IcyHot, TigerBalm Creams https://www.proze.com/bengay-icyhot-tigerbalm-creams/ Thu, 05 May 2022 21:40:39 +0000 https://www.proze.com/?p=26567 BenWhy, IcyNOT, TigerBUST..???

My knees, my lower back, my shoulder, AYE YAI YAI…playing a few extra sets of tennis, carrying (mostly unneeded) Costco groceries from my car, sleeping wrong, it seems no movement is safe anymore (am I getting old??). Life IS a PAIN! Most of us have been there or ARE there and we’ve probably reached for a locker room smelling cream, Shaq’s endorsed patches, ancient Chinese secrets, or hundreds of other products out there claiming to provide you, “quick, fast acting, immediate relief”. But rub closely, there seem to be an illusion…

Relief Does Not Mean Recovery…

Q: What is BenGay, IcyHot, and others like them?

A: They are products sold as “analgesics”, treatments to relieve pain. They are big business ($3B), with thousands of products, using synthetic and/or natural ingredients. Bengay has been around for 123yrs! You usually use them for muscle and joint aches/pains and acute injuries (which isn’t always good). The ingredients can be termed as – analgesic (pain relieving), counter-irritants (reduces irritation), and anaesthetic (loss of sensation).  Notice: does not say recovery, repairing, or healing..hmmm

Q: How do they reduce pain?

A: It’s a bit of a mystery, but researchers think they block the receptors that send pain signals to the brain. Your nerves, muscle, cells, everything has receptor sites, and certain ones, when triggered will illicit a pain response in the brain (hence, the saying “pain is in your head”). When blocked, you’ll feel less pain.

Q: Any dangers to blocking these receptors?

A: Pain is a signal there is something wrong and that you need to be careful. You do want to feel some pain, it ensures you don’t keep damaging the area. But more importantly, some ingredients can be dangerous. Salicylic acid, used in Bengay, IcyHot, you can overdose on. Arielle Newman, a 17yr old track star, died because of the use of too much Bengay. It’s like overdosing on Aspirin, it’s the same ingredient.

Q: Any other dangers?

A: Methyl salicylate, or salicylic acid, is an anti-clotting agent. If you take too much, you can have internal bleeding, arrhythmias of the heart, liver damage. You have to be careful if you’re taking them with things like Aspirin or using them improperly, like with heat, compression, on/close to wounds.

Q: Do they really work?

A: Partially. Depending on the severity of pain, they may reduce the feeling. But as far a promoting healing and recovery, NO. Research has shown there is no physiological changes that are happening. No repairing, rebuilding, detoxifying. They are either tricking, distracting, or overwhelming the initial triggering of the pain, which then gives you a sense that it is less. Masking one message for another, like if you punched yourself in the arm after you hit your thumb with a hammer.

Q: Is that why they don’t last very long?

A: Exactly. You can only trick, distract, overwhelm the receptor for so long, then it fades away and the pain returns. And you can’t keep reapplying, or the ingredients can become toxic. But more importantly, there is no healing or health taking place, so there is no long-term effect.  In addition, research shows the minor heat and circulation only penetrate to 1cm, just under the skin, not deep in the muscle tissue. You must heal the area, help it to recover, then you’ll feel less and less pain.  There is no healing!

Q: Are they worth the cost?

A: For very temporary relief of pain, maybe, they won’t work with significant levels of pain. They are meant for very minor aches and soreness. They also only focus on minor pain relief, no healing. Their cost will be very low, from $15-$30.00. My analogy is, imagine you’re hungry and you walk into a restaurant, to sniff/smell the food will satisfy you for a bit (that won’t cost much), but to actually eat the food, to truly satisfy your hunger, that’s going to cost you.  You get what you pay for 😊

Q: How is it best to use them?

A: Sparingly and only for immediate relief, acute pain. Long-term, or chronic issues, it won’t do much if anything for. In chronic pain, the nerves send signal without any triggering of the nerve. Do not put too much or frequently, use with Aspirin or other products with same ingredients, heat (even before activity), or with compression. “Poison is the dose” – you can overdo these types of creams like pills.

Q: Better alternatives?

A: You can have pain relief without recovery, but with recovery, you’ll always have pain relief. Focus on recovery by focusing improving the health of the tissue, calming the nerves, and getting good, healthy blood flow through the area.  You can do this by careful movement, strengthening (creating resiliency – improving pain threshold) the area and surrounding areas (reduces the stress), hydrating (improves blood flow), and reducing inflammatory and toxic things (foods, products, drinks).

Q: What should I look for in a product?

A: Products made with natural ingredients can be very powerful. But be careful, Wintergreen Oil is made up of 98% methyl salicylate, so don’t DIY if you’re not experienced. Choose products that are tested, well designed, have been used in a clinical setting, and do not just focus on pain relief, but recovery.

Q: Your Choice?

A: Ha, well, the only one I’d choose is mine (but I’m biased).  NERVE – Soothing Cream. It’s because RELIEF was the RESULT of working on the true nature of injury. Whether it’s sprains, strains, pulls, direct trauma, nerve impairment or function, NERVE focuses on the “root processes”, the very core/fundamental things you need to repair and recover (i.e. Nerves & Soft Tissue). NERVE nurtures the nerve back to health, modulates the inflammatory response (so you get healthy inflammation), and enhances blood circulation to rush healing factors to the area and promote detoxifying (like a massage) to the area.

The top 10 PRōZE questions https://www.proze.com/the-top-10-proze-questions/ https://www.proze.com/the-top-10-proze-questions/#respond Thu, 20 Aug 2020 16:36:45 +0000 https://www.proze.com/?p=17652 Although CBD is becoming more and more popular, not everyone understands it fully.  Sometimes they get Hemp/CBD mixed up with Marijuana/THC, or they think it’s still not legal in their state, or they just want to learn more about it.  To help you, we’ve answered the most common questions we’ve seen over the years…

1. Are PRōZE products legal?

Yes, definitely.  You can buy and sell the PRōZE products in all 50 states because they are made from legally grown, Industrial Hemp.  You can also ship the PRōZE products anywhere in the United States.

2. Are PRōZE products FDA approved?

No.  However, the FDA doesn’t approve any CBD products.  The FDA actually doesn’t approve any dietary supplements, even the multi-vitamin you take or protein powder you drink, none of those products are approved by the FDA.

3. Will PRōZE products get me high?

No, not at all.  The PRōZE products do not contain any level of ingredient that would create psychoactive experiences, regardless of how much you took. PRōZE contains high levels of CBD, CBD is not a psychoactive and is for health and wellness.

4. Will I test positive using the PRōZE products?

Although PRōZE has never had any feedback from our customers testing positive, it’s critical that an individual check with their testing authority.  Every test is different, and some organizations may test for a variety of ingredients.

5. Is PRōZE made from Marijuana?

No.  All PRōZE products are made from Industrial Hemp.  Industrial Hemp is a completely different plant than Marijuana.

6. Do PRōZE products contain THC?

In (3) of our products, NERVE, SHIELD, and NODZZZ, we use Full Spectrum Hemp Oil.  This oil contains what is called trace and ultra-trace amounts of THC.  It is well below the legal limits of 0.3% and is shown as undetectable in most tests.

7. How do I know the PRōZE products are safe?

Every ingredient in the PRōZE products has been tested and certified to be non-toxic and shown to be safely used in dietary supplements.  In addition, each product goes through what is called a Microbioal Test to test for any foreign or harmful elements.

8. Where are the PRōZE products made?

All PRōZE products are made in the United States and are manufactured under US guidelines.

9. How do I know the products have what they say in them and are tested?

What does CBD actually do https://www.proze.com/what-does-cbd-actually-do/ https://www.proze.com/what-does-cbd-actually-do/#respond Wed, 19 Aug 2020 21:11:08 +0000 https://www.proze.com/?p=17643 So what does CBD actually DO?

Ha. good question.

You’ve probably heard that CBD helps just about everything. From stress, to aches, to sleep, to your kids SAT’s. Sounds like a cure-all, right?

You might have thought, “but how can one nutrient help fix just about everything? Sounds kinda sketch….”

Well, we are going to break down and hopefully eliminate the confusion about what CBD does and how it works.

Can CBD help all those issues? YES, but not directly.

You see, there’s a system in your body called the ENDOCANNABINOID (en-doh-kuh-nab-uh-noid) SYSTEM, let’s call it the ECS for short, this system is what actually affects the responses that we mentioned before.

Let’s break it down.

Your body, YOU, your life is result of processes that are happening in your body 24/7, 365. And the way these processes function effectively, in large part, is being driven by this system in your body, the ECS.

Think of all the systems in your body, ie, digestive system, nervous system, cardiovascular system, etc… as an orchestra, and think of your ECS as the conductor.

In an orchestra, a good conductor makes the orchestra work harmoniously, same with your ECS. It makes sure each of your systems are not playing too loud (overreacting), or playing too soft, (underreacting), or playing too long (excess or chronic response).

The ECS provides your body balance, harmony, or as the science geeks call it, homeostasis.  You need a strong, confident, healthy conductor to make your orchestra play magnificent music.

SO. EXAMPLE.

Let’s say your ECS is weak or impaired, when it messages the nervous system to do its job, either creating sympathetic (fight or flight) or parasympathetic (chilling or calming) responses, the message won’t be received very well.  So if was telling the nervous system to calm down, unwind, chillout…”it’s time to go to bed”, it won’t hear it, it’ll just stay in that active, mind all-over-the-place, wound up state…so you won’t be able to sleep well.

If you can’t sleep, you won’t be able to recover, which will keep you highly inflamed, which destroys your immune system, which now makes you at risk of infections, viruses, bacteria, etc..  Not to mention, you have no energy which makes a lotta people feel “blah” about their day (and life!), and causes crappy workouts, less “carpe diem”, and overall a bad mood and mental state.

YIKES.

Moral of the story is….you need a healthy endocannabinoid system to allow for the systems in your body to work optimally.

You: “Okay…. super fascinating…. BUT how does CBD fit into the picture?”

Patience grasshopper.

Let’s look at a word you can find in ENDOCANNABINOID. What word do you find in that mouthful?

Correct! CANNABINOID. (ENDO means “within”, so it’s the cannabinoid “within” your body)

CBD is a type of CANNABINOID.

CBD stands for Cannabidiol. (canna-bah-die-ol)

Your endocannabinoid system is fueled by cannabinoids, just like CBD.

Your body makes its own cannabinoids that support + maintain your ECS. They are called 2-AG and Ananamide.  We’ll talk about them another time.

You also feed more cannabinoids into your body through your diet. You can find cannabinoids all throughout the plant kingdom such as carrots, ginsing, broccoli, pepper, and especially in abundance in cannabis. These are called phyto (plant) cannabinoids.  CBD is one of them.

The issue Americans face, is that we as a population, we are not consuming the adequate amount of plants and therefore we can be what we call “cannabinoid-deficient.”

Enter cannabis. Specifically hemp.

You see, the cannabis plant family has two plants: marijuana and hemp. Mariana is mainly grown for the cannabinoid THC, and hemp, is mainly grown for its rich-abundance of the cannabinoid, CBD.

THC is useful, but its main use is for its psychoactive effects aka, it gets you high. CBD on the other hand is completely the opposite, it activates the health and wellness systems of the body and has NO psychoactive effects. Fun fact: If someone was too “high”, you would give them CBD, because it brings them back down and into balance.

PRōZE products are made from organically-sourced hemp that is rich in CBD and all of the other great components that the hemp plant carries, other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, phytonutrients, etc, but we won’t get into that now.

Point is: Supplemental CBD like PRōZE helps your ECS be in tip, top shape to help harmonize all the systems in your body, and when the systems in your body are working efficiently, you will feel less aches, stress won’t affect you in the same way, you will have an easier time getting into rest, etc…

Life is just better with CBD.

SO hopefully this blog has helped you understand CBD, how it works, and how it helps! We are super passionate about this and therefore have crafted each product with CBD to ultimately help folks live out their passions, their dreams, their life.

Ultimately people aren’t buying CBD, because they like CBD…they are buying CBD because they are looking for an end-result. a benefit.

And they may not even know, that truly what they are looking for is to live organically fierce.

And we are here to help folks do just that… with you!

TRANSDERMAL CBD https://www.proze.com/transdermal-cbd/ https://www.proze.com/transdermal-cbd/#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2020 17:16:56 +0000 https://helixhouse.co/proze/2020/02/05/transdermal-cbd/ NOBODY likes the aches and pains of everyday life or the muscle soreness you get from going too hard in cycle class. So plain and simple, it is a “no” for pain over here. Currently, there are several products that exist to aid in pain management and muscle soreness. NSAIDs, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, are well-known, orally administered pills to alleviate pain. [1] There is also topical creams to be applied on the area of pain to relieve aches through the surface. But for those who are looking to ease those aches but want to start with nature, CBD might be a good way to go.

the skin you’re in

You’re skin is the first barrier that comes in contact with the outside world. It consists of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. The epidermis gives is a waterproof layer that gives us our skin color. The dermis consists of collagen and connective tissues that support the epidermis. The hypodermis is mainly composed of fat. Within these layers exist neurons that allow us to experience touch and heat. There are also hair follicles and sweat glands that begin deep in the dermis. These are all places where medicinal creams and ointments could absorb into. It is generally thought that absorption occurs through diffusion, which means that molecules go from areas of higher concentration to lower concentration. [2] This suggests that topically applied creams passively bypass the barrier that the skin creates to be absorbed by the cells within.

cbd and endocannabinoid receptors in the skin

The Endocannabinoid system (read about it here) has CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the body, including the skin. [3] Studies on rats suggest that the availability of these receptors in the skin could allow for anti-inflammatory, anti-nociceptive (which means blocking the feeling of pain by sensory neurons) interactions. [4] Studies also suggest the efficacy of CBD in treating pain trans-dermally, especially associated with arthritis. [5] Although mainly tested on rats, these studies show that CBD, when applied topically, has the ability to penetrate the skin deep enough to reach sensory neurons and receptors.

TRPV1, a vanilloid receptor, has also been associated with skin cells. [6] This receptor is important in inflammatory processes. CBD is known to interact with TRPV1 to modulate pain and desensitize neurons, so CBD applied topically has the opportunity to alleviate surface pains through penetration of the skin.

It is suggested that CBD, rather than interacting with the endocannabinoid system directly, enhances the endocannabinoids that are already present in the body. 2-AG is an endocannabinoid naturally circulating in our body that is thought to exist as a mediator in inflammatory responses and may alleviate sensations of pain. [7] In CBD’s enhancement of the concentration of 2-AG, pain sensations can be reduced.

hurts so good

CBD continues to be a promising solution to a variety of daily issues. Muscle and joint pain are common sensations felt by the full spectrum of people, and CBD is showing promise that it has the exact methods to fight such sensations. CBD, through interaction of vanilloid receptors and 2-AG, can moderate pain and allow for someone to continue their day without complaints.

PRōZE 101 – What Is CBD Used For? https://www.proze.com/proze-101-what-is-cbd-used-for/ https://www.proze.com/proze-101-what-is-cbd-used-for/#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2020 17:16:56 +0000 https://helixhouse.co/proze/2020/02/05/proze-101-what-is-cbd-used-for/ This month on the blog we have been giving a bit of a CBD crash course for our readers. Last time on the blog we talked at length about what CBD is made from and how we extract it, and next time we are going to look at the different ways you can use CBD to help enhance your daily performance. This time however let’s shoot for something in-between: what is CBD used for?

What is CBD Used For?

Here at PRōZE we talk a lot about performance and how CBD can help takes your to the next level.  Your body has an incredible built-in system called the endocannabinoid system or ECS. To put it briefly, the ECS is a system of receptors in our body that reacts when signaled by cannabinoids. The body produces these receptors when CBD is present and the two bind, producing great results, here are some of them. The ECS can do all sorts of wonderful things, but it needs fuel (CBD) to make the magic happen.

Pain Relief

Numerous studies have been done on the efficacy of supplementing with CBD for pain relief, including arthritis, inflammation, and incision sites for surgery. A huge chunk of what we consider ‘pain’ is inflammation and swelling, whether in joints or wound sites. With CBD’s help, the ECS can help your body manage the inflammation and decrease the amount of ‘pain’ your body is signaling.

Anxiety, Nerves

CBD has shown the power to act on serotonin receptors, that special part of the brain that helps regulate mood. Another part of the brain that’s important to note is the hippocampus. In people who suffer from anxiety, typically they are found to have smaller than normal hippocampuses. CBD can help here as it promotes neurogenesis, the creation of new neurons. When these new neurons are formed, the hippocampus may benefit and increase in size.  In one study, a dosage of 300mg of CBD was seen to be the most beneficial in helping the participants manage their nerves during a public speaking events. In animals it has even shown an antidepressant effect.

Here’s a better rundown of some of the science thought to be behind the benefits of CBD and anxiety.

Sleep Aid

Many people around the world do not get the quality sleep necessary to live healthy lives. Whether because of anxiety, pain, or funky sleep patterns, they are missing out. CBD may be the answer for them! Again, perhaps because of CBD’s ability to work with the serotonin receptors. One study showed 66% of participants found it easier to get to sleep after taking CBD. Read our piece here for more of the science of CBD and Sleep.

Other Benefits

Here’s the real deal. Unfortunately, studies on the benefits of CBD are still ongoing. We don’t have decades of results and fine-tuned numbers to home in on all the benefits. But we have seen the tip of the iceberg. We know people are getting results for their pain, their rough sleep, their anxiety,  in some cases their acne! Some studies are showing potential heart benefits. In just about every area a study has been focused on, CBD has shown some effectiveness in helping the human body perform as best as it’s able.

Here at PRōZE, we are all in on the benefits of CBD. We have seen the results in others, felt the pain relief and easy sleep in ourselves. That’s why we are able to stand by our products while we continue to study the new, untapped potential of CBD. It’s the pioneering spirit that lead to our formulations, our philosophy, and our commitment to help others lead their lives as best they can be. Ready to find out how CBD works for you? Try out NODZZZ for better sleep, or NERVE soothing cream for pain. Take your life to the next level, whatever that looks like for you.

CBD and Weight Loss, A New Discovery? https://www.proze.com/cbd-and-weight-loss-a-new-discovery/ https://www.proze.com/cbd-and-weight-loss-a-new-discovery/#respond Wed, 05 Feb 2020 17:16:56 +0000 https://helixhouse.co/proze/2020/02/05/cbd-and-weight-loss-a-new-discovery/ Our bodies are wonderful, amazing things. When taken care of, when optimized they can do even more amazing things! That’s what PRōZE is all about, helping us and our PRōs lead a fierce, full spectrum lives! We’re coming up on 2020 (how futuristic is that!?) and that means we’re entering New Year Resolution territory. Perhaps the most common NYR out there is to lose weight, to be healthier. As it turns out, PRōZE might be able to help with that! Let’s dive into CBD and weight loss.

The Science of CBD and Weight Loss

While the use of CBD, in general, is expanding, it (and hemp) is finally getting the study done that we’ve known it needed for a long time and they are coming up with some exciting results: CBD has been linked to weight loss in a few different ways!

The ECS + CBD = Weight Loss

One study(1) linked cannabinoid receptors to the regulating of feeding behaviors in mice. Scientists found that when they were given daily doses of CBD at about 1.1 – 2.3 mg per pound of body weight, the animals lost weight. Another study(2) showed direct response to CBD of decreased food intake compared to other cannabinoids (specifically cannabinol and cannabigerol). These studies show that the CBD hitting the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the animal tissues and brain had effects across the body in the form of weight and eating control. There have been several of these studies and while they’re not the be all, end all of it, the findings are exciting!

Brown Fat = Good Fat?

Another potential avenue to weight loss via CBD has to do with something docs’ call ‘fat browning.’ Turns out there are two different kinds of fats: white fat and brown fat(3). White fat, also called white adipose tissue (WAT), is the dangerous fat, associated with diabetes, obesity and all the rest. Brown fat, or brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a specifically built kind of fat that’s key function is to dissipate energy as heat. When this BAT is present in the WAT, the fat is more easily burned! Okay, now how does CBD come into this?

A study published in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry (4) linked cannabidiol to a couple of possible fat fighters. The study found that CBD enhanced the expression of marker genes for brown fat and proteins, increasing activity. The CBD was also seen to increase protein levels of specific proteins that are used in lipogenesis, or the metabolic creation of fat.

So, CBD and weight loss? It’s beginning to look like there is a clear connection between the two! With CBD helping to generate new cells useful in the burning of fat for energy and slowing down their creation in the first place. Putting CBD into your weight loss regime (along with a healthy diet and exercise) can help you take control of your life and boost your daily performance in life!
