The SERIES function
The SERIES function is both a little complicated, and also rather interesting to use. Go to your "ACCOUNT" button. Click on it.
Then look left to "Create series".
Once you type in a name for the series, then you drag and drop any of your titles to the open box below.
Hit "apply" and you're done.
To "edit" a series, click on the title in the left hand panel.
In this way the whole site is becoming easier to navigate.

Completion of War novel posting
November 10th 2008
That completes the posting of "Jeremy's War". That's all the chapters on the site. Also, if you notice, once you open ANY chapter, on the left side, you get the whole series. So it becomes easy to click on the next chapter in sequence. Looks much tidier as well.
I'm not too sure how to handle the jumble that's beginning to appear under "View all works". Once somebody actually clicks on a chapter, then the above mentioned "series box" is neat and in sequence. But what you see under "view all works" is less pretty.
We'll work on it.

Hits counter for guests
There is a new feature available. A "guest hits" counter.
If you go into any writer's "view all works" function (click on name + click on 'view all works') you will now see an extra column labeled "hits". This counts all non-member internet clicks on the story or poem concerned. It measures "guests" activity as it were. The "member views" column continues to show how many Writers Harbor site members have clicked on the story. Voting and commenting can still only be done by site members.
We hope of course that more people will take the small trouble to sign up and become more active...

Most active readers
April 8th, 2008
As you will see on the opening page, the "most active readers" (who participate in the site by leaving comments and feedback) are now being recognized for the part they play, in their own listings.
There have been several inquiries from people who wanted to know if it was okay to join although they were not writers. Sure! Of course it is.
Join up, and have fun!

New feature: YouTube inserts
March 6th 2008
Our ever diligent coders have added a new feature: the capability to insert clips from YouTube. If you check out the story "Separation" (go to Francis Meyrick, click on his name, look left, click on "view all works") you will see an example of the use of this feature.
It's also on "Piano Lessons"
and
"The Lonely Butterfly - part 1"
To use this feature, look for the small YouTube icon in the control panel when you are posting work. You need to insert the 8-15 character long alphanumeric soup you see in every YouTube URL. In the example of "separation" the code was: "P_C_WxkSJ5g".
The Writers Harbor software does the rest.

Auto-arrange feature
Feb 14, 2008
Our ever resourceful and cunning coding team
has enabled a neat new "auto arrange feature".
To play with it:
* click on (any writer)(example) "Francis Meyrick"
* click on bold letters "view all works"
* scroll down (past the Writer's story Guide)to the lists of stories and poetry.
* A) click on "TITLE"
you will see all the titles arrange themselves alphabetically.
For sequential/episode pieces, with sequential chapters, this will make it much easier to find and locate the next installment.
or:
* B) click on "GENRE"
Now you will see all the poems arrange themselves together, then all the short stories, all the recorded audio, etcetera.
This is a neat feature, and is inline with our stated intentions:
namely to build up a site that STARTS OUT real simple and uncluttered for the newbie. However, it then cunningly adds in features and tools for the more experienced user to enjoy.
That is not as easy as it sounds, but we're heading that way.
Overwhelmingly, what we really want is an user friendly intuitive interface from the git-go.
You can also go into PUBLIC WORKS, and click on any of the following:
Title
Author
Genre
Comments
Views
in each case, you will see an auto-rearrange take place.
You kind of need to play with it to get the hang of it, but you'll find it is a neat feature.
Again, we're wide open to feedback.

Writers Story Guide
Feb 13, 2008
You can now access the "writer's story guide" (WSG) by going into "account" (top right corner), and then going into "edit profile".
below the "profile" box, you will now see another box, with the label "writer's story guide". This you can edit any way you wish.
We imagine that people will use this tool in different ways.
One way is to simple list all the stories and poetry.
Another way is to talk about your aims, or explain the different projects.
If you click on Francis Meyrick, and then go to "view all works", you will see an example of a rough "Writer's story guide".
This is just an initial rendering, but it maybe gives you some ideas....

What comes next?
Tuesday, February 12th 2008
What comes next?
We are working out what the next development will be. If you click on the name "Francis Meyrick" and then click on the bold "View all works", you will see all the works in one place. The personal studio concept. Now what we are looking at, is giving writers the ability to write a "Writer's story guide" (WSG) within that personal area. This would be different from a "profile". It's more directed at giving the writer the opportunity to talk about the background to different stories and poetry, his/her motives, goals, or aspirations. We're hoping it will add "color" to the writer's personal studio.
One of the headaches we face is that we don't see much point in trying to make a "MySpace" clone, or a "Facebook" copy.
We kind of want it to be oriented towards more or less serious creative writing. As opposed to "chat room format" blogging.
Nothing wrong with the latter, but there are already so many sites catering to that end, we would like to stay more a "writer's site".
Your input is very welcome. I'm also posting this article in the "suggestions forum". So you can pitch in with any ideas or concerns you have.

Writer's Cafe meltdown
Sunday, February 10th, 2008
I'm very sorry to hear about the meltdown on Writer's Cafe.
I have received PM's, indicating that all the contributions from writers have been lost due to an administrative error.
One writer, who had already suffered the misfortune of the theft of their personal computer, lost over 600 pieces of work.
I'm really sincerely sorry for everybody there.

Beta version
January 19th 2008
We are up to our beta version now. Everything is pretty well working as planned. The basics are there, and server speed seems good in the USA from what I'm hearing. For some reason, it's slower in Germany.
Just keep me informed on how you're all getting on.
I'm enjoying it, and I hope you all are too!

As of Jan 12th 2008, we are moving the site to a new and much more powerful server. The web address will be: www.writersharbor.org
The old address will work for a while!

Internet Explorer problems
Sunday November 25th 2007
Seems people using "Mozilla Firefox" as browser (free download from www.mozilla.com) are not having much trouble at all, other than grumbles about the scoring system (stars) and "messenger".
People using Internet Explorer ARE having problems with formatting commands appearing in text.
Coder team is looking at it.
Meanwhile, we suggest you use Mozilla Firefox. You can have multiple browsers on your computer, and use which ever you wish for the purpose in hand.
The "edit" feature seems to be working flawlessly.
